BBC NEWS: Mexico pipeline blast kills 79 and injures dozens more
The illegal tapping of the Pemex-owned Tule-Tuxpan pipeline in Tlahuelilpan, Mexico resulted in a blast killing at least 79 people. Fuel thieves drilled into the pipeline causing a gasoline geyser, attracting almost 800 people who attempted to fill containers with gas in an effort to avoid the current high prices of the fuel. Soldiers’ efforts to urge people to stay away from the leaking fluid failed and the geyser soon erupted into flames.
