Ebola is a severe, often fatal illness affecting humans, but there are limited licensed therapeutics and vaccines available. In January 2023, the Ministry of Health of Uganda declared the end of the Ebola disease, 42 days after the last confirmed case tested negative. The outbreak was declared in September 2022, and Mubende was the epicenter of the outbreak. In collaboration with the World Health Organization, the MoH implemented enhanced surveillance activities to search, identify, and list cases. In terms of vaccinations, three candidate vaccines were identified and over 5000 doses arrived in the country on December 8th and later on December 17th.
