NPR: New gene-editing tools may help wipe out mosquito-borne diseases

Mosquito-borne illnesses, such as malaria, dengue, and yellow fever, kill over 700,000 people annually. However, using gene editing, a company called Oxitec has developed mosquitoes unable to produce female mosquitoes, the mosquitoes that spread these deadly diseases. These genetically engineered mosquitoes have the potential to reduce their population sizes significantly, which should lead to a decrease in the number of cases.
