NBC: FBI Warns About Russia-Linked Malware Threat to Home Routers, but Questions Linger

This past Memorial Day weekend, the FBI issued a statement urging people to restart their home routers in an effort to stop the spread of malware thought to be from Russia. Hacking into these smaller routers is thought to allow jumping to further routers and collecting large amounts of personal data. Not only can these hackers collect data, but they may be able to make your computer unusable or block network traffic. Currently, more than 500,000 routers have been identified and in fifty-four countries. Those consumers who never changed the password that came with the router upon purchased are thought to be at heightened risk.
