Over the past week, over eight residents in Washington Heights have been sickened by a Legionnaires outbreak. Seven of the residents are currently hospitalized but fortunately, no deaths have been reported. Legionnaires disease is transferred when contaminated water becomes airborne. Normally, legionella bacteria sits on the surface of the water as a thin film and following any distribution the particles spread and can aerosolized causing pneumonia-like symptoms in those who are exposed. Investigations are underway to test water sources around the outbreak cluster. To read more about the outbreak, click here.
