The number of cases of virulent Newcastle disease in backyard chickens is on the rise. Citizens should take note that no human has ever contracted Newcastle disease from eating properly cooked poultry, however those coming into contact with the infected chickens can acquire it. Those who do work with these birds should wear proper protective gear and wash their hands frequently. All those with infected birds should notify the USDA to aid their surveillance of the disease.
