Scientific American: Smartphones Are Helping Health Workers Combat Tuberculosis

With highly infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, those infected must be monitored to ensure they take their prescriptions daily without missing a dose. It can be very difficult to monitor patients when they are not home for extended periods of time and health worker’s must make long commutes to patients’ houses. Recently, a video app has been implemented that takes an encrypted video of the patient taking their medication and sends it to health workers who can monitor several patients from a single location. Video use has been correlated with high adherence to medication as well as cost savings for health departments.
