ABC: Drug-resistant Candida auris spreads to Chicago, healthcare facilities

In 2009, Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus, was first seen in Japan and has since spread to over twenty countries; the number of cases is growing in numbers in both New York and Chicago. Candida auris is resistant to what the hospitals and health care facilities normally use to clean, meaning that if it is brought into the room, it can stay in the room and infect the next person even when the room is cleaned. With a death rate of one in three people who get the infection, it is “a serious global health threat,” according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
