NBC Los Angeles: Rotting Trash Piles Sky-High in LA, Attracting Rats and Raising Concerns of a New Epidemic

According to the city health department, rats carrying typhus-infected fleas were found in Los Angeles last fall, with some fleas found on animals waiting to be adopted. Last year, Los Angeles had 124 cases of typhus, typically transmitted through bacteria that gets into eyes or cuts on the skin, with symptoms appearing two weeks after infection including high fever, rashes, and aches. Once again, there are growing concerns this year due to piles of rotting trash left uncollected by the city. As of now, there is no plan by the city to control the growing rat populations.
