The New York Times: How Australia Could Almost Eradicate H.I.V. Transmissions
We are finally seeing some signs of victory in the 40-year-long battle with HIV. Researchers in Australia say that the country is on a path to virtually eliminate the transmission of the virus. In the past five years, the number of new infections of HIV has dropped by almost a quarter, with higher declines among the gay and bisexual community. The most recent advance in Australia’s battle against HIV is the rapid adoption of a drug regimen, PrEP. Coupled with Australia’s universal healthcare system, any permanent resident or citizen of Australia is able to get the prescription drug from a doctor or a pharmacy for as low as 40 Australian dollars, or about $28. Andrew Grulich, an author of the Kirby Institute report and a professor of epidemiology at the University of New South Wales, claimed that if the efforts persist, the country stands a chance in eliminating HIV in 2023.
