SA: The False Promise of Fish Oil Supplements

After years of decline prior to 2011, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease related deaths has been increasing. Under false pretense that it will lower their chance of heart disease, about 19 million U.S. citizens take daily fish oil supplements. Many of these individuals do not know that natural supplements are not under FDA approval and thus have not undergone the required trials to strongly suggest their efficacy. When conducting a survey, researchers found that 85% percent of physicians who recommended fish oil supplements to their patients were under the assumption that it was FDA approved. Recently, a prestigious medical journal published a study and review of 24 dietary supplements thought to reduce risk of heart disease.
