In Imperial County, California, the county is attempting to declare a public health emergency in response to air pollution at the state’s largest lake, the Salton Sea. The lake is reported to be rapidly shrinking and exposing possibly harmful contaminants from years of agricultural runoff and military testing. This harmful pollution, as well as dust from the Salton Sea, is harming the residents, and the county is seeking state and federal aid because they believe it is beyond their control. The Deputy Natural Resources Secretary has said that efforts to resolve the issue are already being considered, but agreed that local, state, and federal agencies need to work together to lessen the dust emissions in the area.
