In a scientific article published in Science journal, researchers found that there is a correlation between non-REM sleep and the cleansing of toxins in the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid washes over the brain during non-REM sleep allowing neurons to synchronize turning on and off. When all the neurons are turned off, byproducts accumulated in the brain (“brain plaque”) are flushed out. Brain plaque build-up leads to the destruction of synapses connecting nerves in the brain, leading to neurodegenerative diseases.
