Child sex abuse cases treated in ERs rose more than 70% in seven years, study says

From a study published by JAMA Pediatrics, the amount of children in the US who were admitted into emergency rooms for sexual abuse-related injuries has risen more than 70%. What was confusing to the study researchers, was that rates of child sexual abuse have decreased since the 1990s. A medical director of the center for child protection at UCSF Children’s Hospital is not surprised by these statistics and says that this is a common problem seen in young girls which constitute over 85% of children treated for sexual abuse.
