US News & World Report: Youth Homelessness Isn’t What You Think

There are over 700,000 homeless teenagers in the United States. Unlike the perception that homeless people live on the streets, many homeless teens receive temporary housing from family or friends. These couch-surfers are often unaccounted for in the distribution of federal housing for the homeless, which is based on the literal definition of homelessness referring to those who live on the streets. The proposed Homeless Children and Youth Act plans to widen the definition of homelessness to account for diverse living situations and give local communities greater autonomy on partitioning resources for their homeless populations.
