As the spread of the new coronavirus continues to make headlines and stir concerns across the world, Saplakoglu hopes to inform and update viewers through her article ““More US cases of coronavirus, as death toll rises: Live updates on 2019-nCoV.” As of Jan. 27, there are five confirmed cases in the U.S. and a total death count of 80 as reported by The New York Times. The number is expected to increase according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the next few weeks. The number of confirmed cases globally has reached 3,000, with additional cases appearing in Australia, France, and several other countries in Asia. According to CDC, the coronaviruses are a “large family of viruses that can cause respiratory illnesses such as the common cold.” Originating among animals, a handful of viruses like the nCoV can transmit onto humans and spread by contact or air. Similar to the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), the nCoV is theorized to originate in two common snakes in southeastern China: Bungarus multicinctus and Naja atra, but no concrete evidence has been provided to confirm this claim. Symptoms of this new virus can include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.
