New leaked data finds that the Chinese government mass detention campaign has been targeting Uighur Muslims specifically for their religion and family ties, not just political dissent as authorities have claimed. The Chinese database looks at ordinary activities such as praying and growing a beard as criteria for detainment. Chinese authorities are also more likely to detain people with relatives already in the camps. Another focus is on individuals who attempt to go abroad. Once detained, Uighurs are placed into categories such as “trustworthy” or “not trustworthy”, criminalizing them for unjustified reasons.
