SA: Methane Emissions from Oil and Gas May Be Significantly Underestimated

New research suggests that the fossil fuel industry may have an even larger hand in the world’s methane emissions than previously thought. The two significant ways that methane is released into the atmosphere are: human activities and natural processes like the slow release of gas from mud volcanoes. Previously, methane emissions from natural resources were thought to be between 40-60 million metric tons per year, however, the estimate is now thought to be around only 1.5 million tons. Because of this finding, researchers believe that the emissions attributable to the fossil fuel industry may be about 40% higher than previous thought. Researchers feel that these findings identify a significant potential for positive change through decreasing human-caused emissions.
