The way that flu deaths are counted often distorters our view when making the comparison between COVID-19 and the flu. The estimation that 25,000-69,000 people die from the flu per year is an estimate that the CDC produces by multiplying the number of death counts reported by the use of coefficients in an algorithm, based on assumptions on how many cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are believed to be unreported. The actual number of deaths counted per year are in the realm of 3,500-16,000 deaths. Looking deeper into this estimate, flu deaths also include pneumonia cases and there is not currently research that supports the highly inflated estimation of cases that are unreported. Instead, to accurately compare the flu and COVID-19, we should compare the actual number of deaths attributable to each in a set period.
