IBM reports that between August 2019 and April 2020 security breaches cost companies on average $3.86 million and nearly 52% of these security breaches were caused by malware attacks. Notably, the report focused on approximately 500 security breaches that occurred during this time period and specifically studied breaches that involved between 3,400 to 99,730 records. To note, the $3.86 million average cost does not include mega-breaches which are characterized by a breach of more than 50 million records.
