New York Times: A New Coronavirus Adviser Roils the White House With Unorthodox Ideas

759

This past week, President Trump brought Dr. Scott Atlas onto the White House’s coronavirus task force. Unlike other doctors on the task force, Dr. Atlas is a radiologist, with no qualifications as an epidemiologist or infectious disease expert. His views align with many views of the Trump administration–questioning the use of masks, claiming that children cannot pass on the virus, pushing the revised CDC recommendations that discouraged coronavirus testing for asymptomatic individuals, and urging the reopening of schools. Dr. Atlas also vouched for little restrictions on the general U.S. population while protecting vulnerable citizens in order to achieve herd immunity, a strategy currently being exercised in Sweden with little success.
