New York Times: Brazil’s Covid Crisis Is a Warning to the Whole World, Scientists Say

As Brazil is continuing to face a brutal coronavirus outbreak, preliminary studies suggest that the Brazilian coronavirus variant is reinfecting people who have already had the virus. The situation is worsened by the fact that Brazil has been unable to secure a large enough number of doses. According to the health ministry, only about 1.5 million people had received both doses. Brazilians are losing faith in the government that is led by a president who, to this day, is downplaying the threat of the virus and continues to offer dismissive remarks about the benefits of masks. Tracking the spread of the variant has been halted due to limited resources for testing, greatly keeping the scientists behind the curve. Anderson Brito, a Brazilian virologist at Yale University, said his lab alone sequenced almost half as many coronavirus genomes as Brazil had.
