The Mu variant of the Coronavirus was marked as a variant of interest by the World Health Organization this past week. The designation indicates that the variant is potentially more transmissible than the original strand of the coronavirus, and some initial concerns were voiced surrounding the virus’s immune escape abilities. However, more research is needed before officials can say with certainty the degree to which vaccination provides protection against the variant. The Mu variant was first reported in Colombia in January 2021, however, it has now been reported across the United States (roughly 2,000 cases). In Los Angeles County, 167 cases were reported from June 19th to August 21st. Read more about the spread of the Mu variant here and read the W.H.O’s weekly report on the Coronavirus here
