With one mass shooting after another, California is already in talks of more stricter gun laws. Governor Gavin Newsom, whose core tenet is gun control, acknowledges the limits of state-level policy. With California at the forefront in gun control policy, Newsom supports proposed legislation to limit who can be issued a license to carry concealed weapons. Other proposals include a “firearm industry standard of conduct,” allowing the state Department of Justice and gun violence survivors to sue for egregious violations of state sales and marketing regulations. However, obstacles to enact more stringent gun laws have been blocked by Republicans and gun rights groups. Ultimately, as stated from Senate Republican Leader Brian Jones of Santee, new legislation should be worked on in a bipartisan manner.
