Even with some of the strictest gun laws in the country including in-depth background checks and the more recent increase in the minimum age required to purchase a firearm, California was plagued with a string of mass shootings in the first few weeks of 2023. Experts say that there are too many guns in the U.S. to prevent gun violence in any given state regardless of how strict California’s gun policy may be, though gun violence has affected Californians at a much lower rate than in other states. Experts also blame the flawed background check system that does not catch everyone and where prospective purchasers can lie, especially if they were willing to commit a mass shooting.
