As Pelosi Departs Taiwan, China Gears Up for Military Drills

Widely welcomed by Taiwan and not so much China, the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited the island in 25 years – a sign of international support for the self-ruled democratic island. However, with increasing threats from China claiming Taiwan as its territory, pro-China demonstrators have criticized the Speaker for interfering in China’s internal affairs. Other responses include China’s plan for live-fire drills in areas overlapping Taiwan’s territorial waters. This standoff is eerily similar to the Third Strait Crisis, despite the progress of both countries. It is also important to note the international support for Taiwan, and its improvement from the 1970s.
