Time: Taking Daily Aspirin May Be Risky for Healthy Older Adults: Study

For years, older adults have been taking an aspirin a day to keep the heart attacks away. However, a recent study involving more than 19,000 American and Australian older adults says otherwise. While the use of daily aspirin has been shown to reduce the likelihood of another heart attack or stroke in those who have already had one, this study concluded that for healthy adults, or those who have not had a previous heart attack, there were no significant benefits. Those who took an aspirin a day did not have a lower rate of cardiovascular issues compared to those who took a placebo pill daily. Those taking the aspirin daily actually showed more major bleeding and a higher mortality. Researchers conclude that people should discuss the benefits and risks with their doctors to decide what is best for them individually.
