There appears to be a strong association between the amount of money pharmaceutical companies spend advertising opioids to doctors and the number of prescriptions written for the drugs, subsequently leading to one reason for the rise in opioid overdose deaths. In the United States, opioid marketing is mostly concentrated in the Northeast, particularly in urban areas.
