AAMC: Why Women Leave Medicine

“Research reveal that almost 40% of women physicians go part-time or leave medicine altogether within six years of completing their residencies […] The primary reason? Family” (Paturel). While most research has labeled gender discrimination to be the primary reason for limited career opportunities for women, the work-family conflict seems to play a significant role as well. Women face a majority of the household responsibilities, generally don’t receive adequate paid leaving time, and face problems returning to work after.
