Increased Fecal Bacteria in California’s Waterways Attributed to Homeless Crisis

California’s waterways including beaches, streams, and rivers are contaminated with fecal bacteria that exceed state limits. Fecal bacteria in waterways is typically related to issues in sewer systems and septic tanks. However, water quality officials state that there is evidence that the source of this increase in fecal bacterial may be due to the growing homeless population in California. The reason being that members of the homeless population do not have access to toilets and dump raw sewage directly into local waterways or drains directly flowing to waterways.
