Falling Through the Cracks: Many Americans Won’t Get Coronavirus Stimulus Checks

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economy Security (CARES) Act that pass in the House of Representatives on March 27 outlines the $2 trillion stimulus bill that provides payments up to $1,200 for those who make less than a certain limit. Yet, many Americans will not make the cut due to a variety of reasons, including a majority of college kids that are dependents, immigrants without a Social Security number, people who have child support debts, and dependent disabled adults. These gaps are the result of the urgency to get the money to Americans who need it the most with the large number of coronavirus cases increasing by the day. The payments are set to be distributed in mid-April by the IRS, who are tax returns to determine eligibility.
