SA: Health Care Workers Are Scared, Sad, Exhausted—and Angry

Many frontline health care professionals, such as nurses, physicians assistants, and doctors are currently risking their lives to save others, fearing that they’ll spread COVID-19 to their family members and mourning their patients. However, many are also feeling anger, stemming from potentially morally injurious situations they have been put in. Moral injury is defined by U.S. military psychiatrist, Johnathan Shay, to describe a “betrayal of what is right by leaders in high-stakes situations.” This feeling arises because current leaders, from hospital administrators to the President, have been betraying health care professional’s trust. Some health care workers that have spoken out against these situations have reportedly been fired as a result of their comments. People are urged to support agencies like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to support frontline workers and contact local and state officials to support measures that decrease COVID-19 spread.
