NYTimes: Millions on Medicaid May Soon Lose Coverage as Pandemic Protections Expire

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a requirement that people enrolled in Medicaid not lose their coverage. Now, this requirement no longer exists, and millions are at risk of losing their health insurance coverage. Coverage was maintained throughout the pandemic due to increased federal funding to ensure that people who may no longer qualify for Medicaid were not removed. It is this funding that is going away and with it the monetary ability to continue covering people. Although some people losing coverage will be eligible for free plans through the Affordable Care Act marketplace, many others will fall into the eligibility gap, where they do not qualify for Medicaid or reduced/free ACA coverage, but also cannot afford private insurance on their own.
