People detail their fear while packing a car with only the essentials to survive. Many escaped to the beach where they dug trenches by the water to jump into if the fires came near. Others called it apocalyptic because there is no electricity, no mobile phone service, long lines to fuel cars, and stores are ransacked until the shelves are empty.
