South Dakota is the first state to conduct a full clinical trial on hydroxychloroquine to test its effectiveness in treating and potentially preventing COVID-19. The trial is being led by the largest rural health provider in the country, Sanford Health. The study will include 2,000 individuals exposed to COVID-19. Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat malaria and rheumatic conditions like lupus and arthritis, and has conflicting evidence on effectiveness in treating COVID-19.
