CNN: What to Know About ISIS-K, the Terror Group Claiming Responsibility for the Kabul Airport Attack
As tensions rise in Afghanistan with the withdrawal of US troops and the Taliban seizing control, other radical militant groups are taking advantage of the region’s instability. In a recent suicide bombing attack, outside Kabul Airport, 13 US troops and more than 90 Afghans were killed. The militant group that claimed responsibility for the attack, ISIS-K, has claimed thousands of lives dating back as early as 2018.
ISIS-K — numbering in strength from 1,500-2,000 — and other ISIS forces grow bolder with their attacks as their take advantage of the disarray caused by the US withdrawal and find themselves at odds with growing Taliban strength. When US forces fully withdraw from the region, analysts expect major conflict to arise between the Taliban and ISIS forces.
