California cuts ties with Walgreens after company limits access to abortion pills
In a tweet on Monday, Gavin Newsom refused to conduct business with Walgreens shortly after the pharmacy chain refused to dispense abortion pills in some Republican states. As of last week, Walgreens said it will not dispense abortion pills in states of 20 Republican attorney generals who warned them of potential law breaks if they were to dispense them by mail. On Friday, the White House released a statement, saying that it was “‘dangerous and unacceptable’ for elected officials to target women’s access to federally approved medication abortion pills.” The US Food and Drug Administration had allowed retail pharmacies to sell abortion pills (including by mail) in January. Especially after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June, abortion by medication has drawn controversy and criticism.
