QAnon is an online conspiracy cult that has been massively spreading across major social media platforms this past year. This “virtual cult” started off on the anonymous message board website, 4chan, releasing theories about Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Election. Now, QAnon is a global phenomenon with the majority of its following in Europe and Latin America. Accounts and pages on Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Twitter, and TikTok now relay the exposes and theories of QAnon. Major platforms struggle to contain QAnon’s influences, which include anti-lockdown protests, rallies against 5G internet, child sex-trafficking theories, and anti-Semitic discourse.
